Geocache Description:

“BASEBALL HISTORY 2 - CHUCK KLEIN”

Chuck Klein's 1992 Conlon Baseball Card

Chuck Klein was a young Indianapolis native when the Philadelphia Phillies discovered him playing semi-pro ball with a Fort Wayne club. The Phillies purchased the rights to Klein and he wasted no time showing he could play at the major league level. In his first partial season he got 91 hits in 64 games, resulting in a .360 batting average.

Over the next five seasons Klein was one of the dominant players in the National League. In 1932 he led the league in home runs and stolen bases, the last player to accomplish that. In 1933 he won the triple crown, but finished 2nd in MVP voting to pitcher Carl Hubbell. Klein was an excellent fielder as well. His 44 assists in 1930 is still the national league record.

Klein was obtained by the Cubs for the 1934 season, and while his statistics were okay with the Cubs, they were below the All Star levels he had put up in Philadelphia. He returned to the Phillies shortly after the start of the 1936 season and finished out his career there with the exception of one season with the Pirates. His last three seasons during the war years were spent making the ocassional pitch hitting appearance.

After his baseball career ended, Klein openned a bar in Philadelphia, but after suffering a stroke he returned to Indianapolis, where he died at the young age of 53. The veteran's committee voted Chuck Klein into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980.

Chuck Klein's Headstone

The posted coordinates will take you to Chuck Klein's headstone in the St. Joseph and Holy Cross Cemetery on the near southside of Indianapolis. You will notice the headstones of Chuck's mother and father along side him. This is a gated cemetery and is only open between 8-5, although it does stay open until 7:00 from April to September. Plan your visit accordingly.

If you have any trouble spotting the headstones of the Klein family, look for a taller stone for Ray Mormino with a statue of Mary on it. The Kleins are two rows due west of the Mormino monument.

The final cache is at 39.44.ABC 86 09.DEF.

You will need the year's from Frank and Margaret Klein to get the numbers you need.

Frank Klein 1867-GHIJ Margaret Klein 1875-KLMN

A = H - L
B = N - I
C = M
D = J
E = B
F = J - I

NOTE: I got better coordinates for the final but did not write down the dates from the headstones. So you can get closer by adding 2 to the north coordinate and subtracting 11 from the west coordinate.
