Geocache Description:

The Balancing Rock of Rainbow Mountain

The listed coordinates will carry you to a assume sight here in North Alabama, the balancing rock of Rainbow Mountain. This is a sandstone structure, this "erosion remnant" has hung here for thousands of years. Once part of a larger cliff, the hard rock of Balanced Rock was sitting on layers of softer sandstone rock. Eventually the soft rock around the sandstone rock eroded away, leaving this large section of sandstone ever so near collapse, yet standing there for all to see. Erosion to this day continues to eat away at this structure, so only time will tell how long it will stand.

The Geology of Sandstone.

Sandstone is a sedimentary layer of rock formed in the nature under the sedimentation process .Erosion, transportation, deposition of sediments under the geological environment to form layered or sedimentary rocks. Generally sedimentary rocks like sandstones, and limestone, will show characteristic layered formations. Typically, sedimentation occurs by the sand settling out from suspension, or ceasing to be rolled or bounced along the bottom of a body of water, such as a river or sea, or ground surface (e.g., in a desert or sand dune region). Finally, once it has accumulated, the sand becomes sandstone when it is compacted by pressure of overlying deposits and cemented by the precipitation of minerals within the pore spaces between sand grains.

Most sandstone is composed of quartz and/or feldspar because these are the most common minerals in the Earth's crust. Like sand, sandstone may be any color, but the most common colors are tan, brown, yellow, red, gray and white.
