Il fiume Bisenzio, principale via d'acqua della provincia di Prato, che da il nome alla omonima valle, trova origine all' interno del territorio della Riserva Naturale Acquerino Cantagallo. Secondo l' etimologia del suo nome (bis-entius, ovvero doppia corrente) il fiume nascerebbe dalla confluenza di due corsi d'acqua. Il problema della corretta individuazione delle sorgenti del fiume Bisenzio e' stato affrontato per la prima volta nell' 800; da allora si sono susseguite varie ipotesi sulla loro localizzazione. Secondo le ultime interpretazioni, i due corsi di acqua che danno vita al Bisenzio, dovendo avere dimensione e portata simile, sono stati individuati nel fosso delle Barbe e nel torrente Trògola. Entrambi i corsi d'acqua, come pure il tratto del Bisenzio fino a Vernio, scorrono in un ambiente integro ed hanno acque con un notevole grado di purezza. Ciò è testimoniato anche dalle interessanti presenze faunistiche legate ad ambienti acquatici quali pesci (scazzone), crostacei (gambero di fiume) ed anfibi (salamandra pezzata). Su questo tratto del Bisenzio si trovano numerosi mulini, alcuni ancora attivi nella produzione di vari tipi di farine, soprattutto quella di castagne. FAUNA DELLA ZONA: la Foresta Acquerino-Cantagallo ha un patrimonio faunistico particolarmente ricco, soprattutto per quanto concerne la presenza di ungulati di pregio,quali il cervo e il capriolo (il cinghiale,reintrodotto alla metà degli anni 50,sta diventano una specie invadente) I predatori sono quelli tipici dell'appennino: volpe, faina, donnola in minor misura la puzzola, ma va soprattutto segnalata la ricomparsa di specie particolarmente protette ed importanti come il lupo ed il gatto selvatico (scomparse definitivamente in molte altre foreste Italiane). Fra i rapaci sono comuni le poiane ed il gheppio,nonchè il falco pellegrino,il lodolaio e il falco grillaio durante il periodo migratorio .................................................... The problem of proper identification of sources of the river Bisenzio was discussed for the first time in' 800; since then have followed different assumptions about their location. According to the latest interpretations, the two water courses that give life to Bisenzio, should have similar size and scope, have been identified in the ditch Barbe and creek Trògola. Both waterways, as well as the stretch of Bisenzio until Vernio, flowing in an environment of integrity and waters with a considerable degree of purity. This is demonstrated by the attendance interesting fauna linked to those ambiences, water fish (scazzone), crustaceans ( River shrimp) and amphibians (salamander mottled). On this stretch of Bisenzio are many mills, some still active in production ofvarious types of flour, particularly that of chestnuts. FAUNA IN THE ZONE: Forest Acquerino-Cantagallo has a particularly rich wildlife heritage, especially as regards the presence of valuable ungulates such as deer and roe (the wild boar, reintroduced in the mid 50, is becoming an invasive species) are those predators Typical of Appennino: fox, faina, donnola to a lesser extent the polecat, but it should be especially marked the re-emergence of especially protected species and important as the wolf and the wild cat (finally disappeared in many other Italian forests). Among the birds of prey are common buzzards and the kestrel, and the peregrine falcon, hawk and lodolaio grillaio during the migration period
