Sir Arthur Rawdon, MP (1662 - 1695) laid out Moira Demesne with trees and exotic plants from Jamaica, thus making it one of the foremost botanical gardens in 17th century Europe. He also built the first hot house in Ireland - there are no traces of any of this to be found.
Situated just 1/4 mile from the M1, Moira is an attractive ridge-top town dating back to the 17th century, but the general area is known to have been settled long before this. The present town was laid out around Moira Castle, built circa 1651, which unfortunately no longer exists. The town’s form has survived along its main street, giving it a very distinctive character, and a large part of the town centre has been designated as a Conservation Area. Moira is currently renowned for its award winning butchers’ shops and pubs / restaurants and during the summer, floral displays.
The Demesne, situated off the main street, has over 40 acres of parkland with a varied selection of award winning rose beds, car park, picnic sites, children's play area and gravel paths. A country sports fair is held in the Demesne for a weekend at the end of May.
The cache is a camouflaged medium sized tablock box; when placed it contained a Stash Card, two AA batteries, a stretchy man(!), an alarm clock, a “Glow in the Dark” pen, a piece of Quartz, a FTF badge and a Gecko Geocoin. Usual logbook, pencil and sharpener. The cache should be a simple find but would not be suitable for wheelchair users.
