Enjoy the colored sands with this drive in Cache to the picnic area inside the large crater, near Yeruham
There are 3 craters (maktesh) in Israel and this phenomenon is only found in Israel. They were formed by an erosion process and fault activity.
This is the "Large Crater", it is the closest crater to reach from central Israel and the road passes from the crater from North to South.
Drive South past Beer Sheva to Dimona and turn right to Yoruham, (West) right before the city. There are signs directing you to the large crater or Large Machtesh.
Drive through the crater and about a KM before the end you will see signs to the "Colored Sands" parking/picnic area.
From the parking area you will see up on the hill the beautiful sands that range from yellow/oranges to pink/purple colors.
You can make your own sand painting bottle here. Take a bring a small bottle, tooth picks to push in the sand colors to where you want and some clay to push down on top fo the sand before closing the bottle so it won't move.
You can also improvise... we used a plastic coke bottle we found, a twig to make the pattern and stuffed some paper in the top before closing the bottle.
The Cache is hidden in a white fim container. Has pages to log in, but no pencil/pen.
Note: there is no mobile phone coverage in this area, so if you are using a GPS from a mobile phone here it will not work.
You can continue along the road you came out of the crater and cross the main road to a parking area for the Yorka'am water pools. It only takes about 15 minutes to reach. Not too much water there but it is nice to cool your feet in the hot desert.
