Geocache Description:

Number 241 in the ‘Church Micro’ series

St James

St James Church in Egerton is believed to have taken a very long time to complete because there is evidence in its features of work commenced in the 13th, 14th and 15th Centuries.

The Tower was built by Sir John Darell of Calehill in 1476. It dominates the village street and surrounding countryside being 100 feet from base to top. It contains the clock and six bells, two of which are dated 1602, two dated 1759, one dated 1717 and the other 1927.

The Church possesses many furnishings but the most impressive is the enormous brass chandelier. It is reputed to be the oldest 36-branch chandelier in the world and was made by Robert Rowland in 1699. It was not made in the first instance for Egerton but for All Saints in Maidstone where it remained until 1856. In that year gas lighting was installed in All Saints and the chandelier was sold for £12 to John Holmes who donated it to Egerton.

The cache is an unknown container. Please ensure it is left securely fastened and well hidden. Thank you.

If you're feeling energetic you can use this cache as the starting point of "The Egerton Ramble" series of six caches, a 5 mile round walk which can also take in "Church Micro 242 - Boughton Malherbe".

If anybody would like to expand the Church Micro series please do, we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names, to avoid duplication.
