Geocache Description:

Cache is small tab-lock box with geocaching sticker, covered in black tape. The walk to the cache is mostly flat for the first 1.2miles on tarmac, then gently sloping for a further 1.7miles on cement and then dirt track and the final 200yards is over bog and shucks and requires appropriate footwear. Higher ratings are only for the last 200yards.

Dungonnell Reservoir was opened in 1971 and provides water for Waterfoot, Cushendall, Cushendun, Glenravel, Broughshane, Clough, Glarryford and parts of Ballymena. Covering 30 hectares when full, the reservoir has a plentiful supply of brown trout.

Dungonnell is located within the Garron Plateau Area of Special Scientific Interest, designated because of its particular geology and peatland flora and fauna. The area also contains habitat types and species that are rare and threatened within a European context, earning it a further designation as a Special Area of Conservation.

The Garron Plateau is the largest area of intact blanket bog in Northern Ireland. Blanket bogs are characteristically wet underfoot and usually dominated by carpets of bog-moss Sphagnum species, cotton grasses and heathers. The site is rich in rare and notable plants including Narrow-leaved Marsh Orchid, Bog Orchid and Marsh Saxifrage. Marsh Saxifrage is an attractive, yellow flowered plant for which this setting is one of only four known outstanding locations in the United Kingdom. Other wild flowers also grow in abundance including Bog Asphodel, which is very poisonous to young lambs, Sun Dew, an insect devouring plant and Bog Cotton.

From the Tullymore Road/Glensbrae Road take the Dungonnell Road to the reservoir.
This cache has been placed with the intention of giving the cacher the option of choosing whether to enjoy a long walk or go straight for the prize.
Co-ordinates for the car park at Dungonnell Reservoir are N54* 59.303, W06* 08.267
From this point the walk is approx. 6miles there and back.

Alternatively you could drive past the car park along the tarmac single lane road to the gate, parking just before the gate on the right, with a total walk length of 3.6miles.

Then, for those of you who wish to, you can drive right up to the pump house through the gate, REMEMBERING TO CLOSE THE GATE BEHIND YOU, along firstly tarmac, then cement and finally dirt track and park at N55* 00.273, W06* 05.661. From here, to get to the cache site, you need to cross below the overflow. The cache is about a 10min walk from here.

NO DOGS as sheep graze freely here. Please leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but memories (and photos!!).

We hope you enjoy this beautiful place as much as we do and while you are in the area please do our other cache “Alex’s First at Evish Hill”
