One day on a trip round Loch Ness we
rounded a corner and saw a view of Loch Tarff spread out before us.
I knew I had seen this view somewhere before and it wasn't until
some time later, while watching the film Local Hero again, that I
made the connection.
In Local Hero, an eccentric chief
of oil company Knox, wants to acquire the village of
Ferness (ficticious name) in Scotland, to make way for a refinery.
He sends Mac, a company negotiator to Scotland to negotiate
the deal. Once there he teams up with Danny, a local company
negotiator. After a visit to the Knox research facility Mac and
Danny drive to the village of Ferness (actually filmed in Pennan
near Aberdeen). On the way, they are driving through fog and hit a
rabbit. Danny takes pity on the rabbit and places it in the back
seat of the car. As the fog is too thick to see far, they spend the
rest of the night in the car. In the morning, the fog has lifted
and the film shows the view on the left below.
On the day we placed the cache, I
took the picture on the right below. The trees have grown
somewhat in the 25 years since the film was made but I think it's
obvious it's the same place.
The cache is a camouflaged tupperware container and contains
the usual items.
