No. 2 in the “Black Loch” series (one day I will do No. 3 but not in time for the Fife Event!)
This loch has been the site of scientific investigation into vegetation changes since the last Ice Age. The impact of humans upon the vegetational history of the area is demonstrable from at least Neolithic times onwards and the presence of Cannabis sativa pollen is strong from c. 985 BP. (BP = before present = 1950 - the year in which the calibration curves for radiocarbon dating was established). So you see there is an ancient history of Cannabis saliva in Fife - some people might say that nothing has changed then!
It’s a pretty wee loch though - and when the cache was set it looked like water lilies were about to start spreading themselves around the edge of the loch here.
Park near the cache at the end of the grassy track leading to the loch side - you are not going to be absent from your car for long enough to block this area!).
If you are wondering why the cache seems to be in an odd location, it’s because when I was setting it, I was exploring around the thorn tree at the side of the road when I stood on a six inch rusty nail which was sticking up vertically from something hidden in the grass. It went right through the sole of my walking boots and into the sole of my foot. Luckily I felt it pierce my boot milliseconds before I felt the pain and so lifted my foot off quickly. I don’t know what to feel - glad because I reacted quickly enough to sustain only a torn flap of skin as opposed to a potential crucifixion scenario, or hacked off because I’ve only worn the boots a few times and now they’re not going to be water resistant with a ruddy great hole in their sole are they?!
