Geocache Description:

This is a 10L cache located just off the Yellow Ridge route in the Silverpeaks.

There are multiple access ways to this cache. The easiest and the way I suggest is to park at the Mountain Track car park as far as you can go along the road at the locked gate . Access this from the first left turn past the old service station in Waitati.

If you wish a overnight trip can be made by staying at the Yellow Hut along the way (not recommended due to the dilapidated state of hut - but then if you are keen!!!) or through to the ABC cave or even further through to Jubilee hut.

Walking in to the Yellow Ridge requires a very steep descent to the Waikouaiti River then back up to Yellow Ridge and may be impassable when the river is in flood.

If you are traveling the entire way over to Jubilee Hut then try Easy as ABC cache at ABC cave or try to find the Bear Safe cache by Eli_The_Moose.

Alternate access is up from Carey's Creek Reserve or the same route explained in Walkways of Otago: Silverpeaks Route.

Walking times to this cache can vary between two hours if your fit and much longer if your out on a leisurely stroll.

The cache is a 10L paint pail, camo painted and well hidden in scrub. When placed the cache contained along with a logbook, pencils and pencil sharper; a ready painted small geocache container, a chess set, a pack of AA batteries, and various other trades and trackables.

This would be an ideal cache for overnight tramp in the Silverpeaks.

This cache is name as a commemorative cache to commemorate the journey the group of 6 intrepid fellows who attended the inaugral Silverpeaks Traverse Event cache.

The Silverpeaks is one of Dunedins iconic conservation reserves. It gained its infamy after three boys died of Hypothermia in the 1970s in a freak snow storm nearby in the Gap.

*** WARNING ***
The Silverpeaks reserve is known for its extreme weather conditions. Heavy fog can roll in on a sunny day with no clouds in the sky in as little as 15 minutes. This cache is located just beyond the bush line and there is no nearby shelter from adverse weather conditions.

Appropriate precautions need to be taken when entering this reserve.
* Always consult the appropriate Topo map (I44 Dunedin is the one you need)
* Take adequate warm clothing (even on hot days), food and water (sunny days can dehydrate you incredibly fast and yellow ridge has no water sources at all).
* Always tell someone where you are going and estimated time of arrival home.
