Sesta tappa dell'itinerario fra i castelli della Lomellina

Il piccolo paese è l'antico municipio romano di Cuttiae, e importante stazione di sosta su una delle più frequentate vie per la Francia. Da qui si poteva raggiungere Torino, seguendo il corso del Po, per poi proseguire per il Moncenisio e la Provenza, oppure dirigersi verso Vercelli, Ivrea ed Aosta ed attraverso il San Bernardo raggiungere la Borgogna. La sua fama come luogo di transito è documentata dalle citazioni sui più famosi itinerari scritti dell'antichità. Nel medioevo, per la sua posizione in prossimità del corso del Sesia, Cozzo fu dotato di un forte castello, ricostruito dai milanesi nel 1214 e rifatto nel XV sec. quando divenne possesso della famiglia Gallarati. In questa occasione fu dotato di due ponti levatoi, di un'alta torre, di una merlatura ghibellina, che ancora corona il fabbricato, e di numerosi abbellimenti interni come modanature in cotto ed affreschi a graffito. Ma i lavori non erano ancora terminati quando, nel settembre del 1499, il castello ospitò addirittura il re di Francia Luigi XII, che guidava il suo esercito verso Milano, di cui rivendicava il ducato come discendente dei Visconti. L'incontro fu talmente importante e solenne da essere documentato in un affresco nella sala maggiore del castello "avvincente e suggestivo, come testimonianza di un fatto storico e come specchio di vita".
La visita al castello è indimenticabile: il complesso sorge ai bordi dell'abitato, immerso nel verde di un parco ben curato; oltrepassato il portone che sostituisce uno dei ponti levatoi ci si trova in un'atmosfera surreale tanto che il re di Francia sembra appena partito!

The small village is the ancient roman town hall of Cuttiae, and important station of pause on one of the most important routes to France. From here, following the river Po, one could reach Turin and then, through Moncenisio reach Provenza, or, heading towards Vercelli, Ivrea and Aosta and through the Saint Bernardo, reach Burgundy. Its reputation as transit place is documented by a medieval copy of an ancient paper of the roman street network. In the Middle Ages, for its position in proximity of the river Sesia, Cozzo was equipped with a powerful castle, reconstructed by Milan people in 1214 and restructured in XV century when was owned by the Gallarati family. In this occasion it was equipped with two drawbridges a high tower, a Ghibelline battlement, still existent, and numerous inner embellishments like mouldings and frescoes. The works were not finish yet when, in September 1499, the castle gave hospitality to the king of France Louis XII, who guided his army towards Milan, of which he claimed the possession as descendant of the Visconti. The encounter was so important and solemn to be documented in a fresco.
The visit to the castle is unforgettable: the castle rises at the border of the village, inside a very nice and green park; entering the main door, which today replaces the former drawbridge, you will drop into a surrealistic atmosphere : the king of France seems just left!
