Geocache Description:

Located in Deepwood Cemetery along the west line. You can almost drive to the cache. Permission for the cache has been given by the Cemetery Board.

Four years after the Civil War Deepwood Cemetery was founded. "With many soldiers buried in haste where they fell in battle, the need for a cemetery where they might be buried with honor was urgent." The leaders of the community who contributed to the purchase of the land for the cemetery were mostly Confederate and Union veterans. Directly east of the cache app. 50 feet is the grave of Varginia Alice Cottey Stockard, founder of Cottey College in 1884. Cottey College is a 2 year womens college owned by the PEO Sisterhood. Northeast of the cache app. 75 paces is the grave of William Joel Stone, the only man to serve as Congressmen, Governor and Senator for the State of Missouri.
