This cache has been archived.

subwaymark: Well it is time to archive this cache. Be sure to see the gallery for photos. There were 45 logs on-site, 43 online. I estimated there were actually closer to 60 people at the event. Thanks for visiting this fun albiet short event!

Geocache Description:

A World Wide Flash Mob Event in Salem Oregon!
NOTE: Location has been changed/coordinates updated as of 4/15/08 see below for details!

On May 10th 2007 at 10am PST there will be Flash Mob events occurring world wide. These events will last for only 15 minutes. The idea is to suddenly congregate at 10am, meet for 15 minutes, then suddenly disperse as if nothing happened!

The State Capitol

The Archives Building

So for Salem there is a Capitol Mall idea!
Sadly the first idea of having the event right by the Capitol Building did not work out because of a muggle group is having their own flash event at the same location date and time. So we have moved a few blocks north to the northern end of the Capitol Mall by the "famous" Archives Building.

This building was opened 1991 (we moved in less then a block away in 1990 and watched it being built). When it opened there was much controversy as it surrounding this records storage/research building. It had some carpet  costing around $127 per Sq-yd. The grass seed planted in front was imported from outside of Oregon to match the marble (yet Oregon is a major grass seed producer). In addition. the neighborhood was upset because so many homes were moved or razed to clear the land.

The Quick Plan
At precisely 10 am (GPSr time) I will place 2 buckets at the posted coordinates which is in the expanse of lawn between the creek and the Archives Building (Archives front entrance shown in photo, the lawn is the left or south). This is your cue to enter the lawn

Bucket # 1 is for logging the event. There will be index cards available to sign your caching name (BYOP) and place the card into the bucket. This is required in order to post your attendance to the event

Bucket # 2 is for Travel Bug trading. Any travel bugs left will be placed at the various TB hotels around Salem. This is also a launching point to a Salem WWFM Travel Bug Race (more on that later)

Event Itinerary
  • Before 10 am, participants (except muggles) are not allowed near ground zero. There is plenty of parking in view of the area, feel free to mill around the area, but do not enter the great lawn area
  • 10:00 am: Buckets are placed on the great lawn, everybody is then welcome to join the fun. Sign your "logs" and place them in the bucket and trade some TB's
  • 10:05 am: Gather for a photo op in front of the Archives Building for "Archival" purposes (with caching music in the background)
  • 10:10 am: FTF prize is pulled from the Log Bucket, potentially other prizes as well
  • 10:14 am: A wooden train whistle will blow giving the 1 minute warning (May 10th is also National Train Day)
  • 10:15 am: everyone must immediately vacate the area without a trace (no running please).

For fun: it would be great if everyone would wear a hat to the event, any hat (might be a great idea if it is raining)!

Some rules (to add to the Flash Mob experience)

  • Even though there is a cache very close to ground zero, please do not attempt to grab it immediately before or immediately after the event. Ground zero must be clear at these times.
  • As there are several caches within a 10 block radius groups are welcome to form after the event, but please do it at least 1~2 blocks away from the event.
  • PARKING: There is plenty of on-street parking available on D, Summer and Capitol Sts. The parking meters on free Saturdays. There is also a small parking lot on the west side of Summer Street for the North Capitol Mall
  • Please leave the parking spots in the Archives Lot empty unless absolutely necessary. I don't want a rush of cars leaving this lot

Salem WWFM Travel Bug Race information

  1. All Travel bugs should have a travel Theme (RR theme would be nice for National Train Day, but not required)
  2. Part of the name for the TB should be "Salem WWFM"
  3. The race will end in May of 2009
  4. One TB per geocache name
  5. There will be prizes for
    1. Most mileage
    2. Most caches visited
    3. Most states/countries visited
    4. Returning back to Salem by May of 2009
OKAY LETS HAVE SOME FUN!!
NOTE: Difficulty is just due to time constraints; terrain is due to wheelchairs may have trouble on the lawn but will have no problems for the group photo!
