Geocache Description:

Helen Johnson fell overboard here in spring 1968, so Rudy decided to build a bridge. Abit of a drive and a steep climb make the final stage a little more challenging.

Most thought Rudy's idea would not work. They said, "That bridge will fall in the river!" Location is old site of Soda Creek reaction ferry. Rudy found an abandoned bridge in Alaska, and brought all its 3,300 pieces by barge and rail to William Lake in the Cariboo. During construction there wasn't enough room on the riverbank to construct the whole bridge, so Rudy relied on techniques used in the logging industry. For 10 days, half of the bridge hung out over the river on cables called skylines, while the rest of the bridge was assembled. The Rudy Johnson Bridge was the only privately owned toll bridge on the Fraser until the provincial government purchased it in 1978. There is a DVD available containing historic footage, combined with stories by Rudy, his crew, sole engineer Howard Elder P.Eng. BC and shareholders, telling the story of the bridge! I suggest bringing your camera no matter the time of year that you journey here as there are some nice sights to see. Deer are often seen along the road also. During the summer months (late July/August) the local Shuswap and Chilcotin people dip net here for Sockeye Salmon and Spring Salmon. Easiest route to reach this location is Soda Creek Road out of Williams Lake. Paved for 16 km then dirt going down. If you want a longer drive continue on past the bridge and you can follow the road all the way to Quesnel (very scenic). First Stage will tell you where the cache is hidden-stage 1 container is small. Final cache is 145 metres from parking. Distance between stages is 572metres but you will want to drive. Sept 24, 2011 replaced container with an ammo box.
