This cache is one in a series dedicated to amazing & unusual organisms. I am astounded by the amazing diversity of plant and animal life that exists in this world. But the real fascination lies with those organisms that are amazing, unusual and odd.

These organisms have capabilities that we do not share and can barely imagine: extraordinary navigational methods, abilities to regenerate lost limbs, live symbiotically with light-producing bacteria, reproduce asexually, survive in suspended animation, change shape and color at will and much more!

Deep Sea Angler Fish (Melanocetus johnsoni)

About me:
I am a grotesque-looking fish that lives in the extreme depths of the ocean. I have a large mouth lined with sharp, fang-like teeth. I get my name from my long, modified dorsal spine which is tipped with a light producing organ known as a photophore. Like many other deep water fish, I use this organ like a lure to attract my prey. I will flash my light on and off while waving it back and forth like a fishing pole. When the prey fish gets close enough, I snap it up with my powerful jaws.

Who I'd like to meet:
Other deep sea angler fish. Let's get together. No... really, let's literally fuse our fishy bodies together and share one single blood stream while constantly providing each other with a steady stream of gametes. What can I say, I'm a romantic. By making contact immediately after birth and staying “connected” for life, we have a better chance of surviving in the total blackness of the deep.
