Geocache Description:

This cache is one in a series dedicated to amazing & unusual organisms. I am astounded by the amazing diversity of plant and animal life that exists in this world. But the real fascination lies with those organisms that are amazing, unusual and odd.

These organisms have capabilities that we do not share and can barely imagine: extraordinary navigational methods, abilities to regenerate lost limbs, live symbiotically with light-producing bacteria, reproduce asexually, survive in suspended animation, change shape and color at will and much more!

Koala Bear (Phascolarctos cinereus)

Rarely descending to the ground, the Koala is not a bear at all but a nocturnal tree-dwelling marsupial, weighing some 35 pounds. The Koala is broadly similar in appearance to the wombat (their closest living relatives), but has a thicker coat, much larger ears and longer limbs. The Koala is one of the few mammals (other than primates) that has fingerprints. Koala fingerprints are similar to human fingerprints; even with an electron microscope, it can be quite difficult to distinguish between the two. (Wikipedia)

The Koala only feeds on the leaves of about 20 of the 800 species of Eucalyptus or Gum Trees. Many factors determine which of the species of eucalyptus trees the Koala eats. An odd habit known as coprophagy is present among baby koalas: while being weaned off their mothers milk and before they can eat the tough eucalyptus leaves, they eat straight from their mothers anus.

Aren't they cute?
