Geocache Description:

This cache is one in a series dedicated to amazing & unusual organisms. I am astounded by the amazing diversity of plant and animal life that exists in this world. But the real fascination lies with those organisms that are amazing, unusual and odd.

These organisms have capabilities that we do not share and can barely imagine: extraordinary navigational methods, abilities to regenerate lost limbs, live symbiotically with light-producing bacteria, reproduce asexually, survive in suspended animation, change shape and color at will and much more!

Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris)

Reaching sizes of up to 4.3 feet tall and 140 pounds, the capybara is considered to be the largest rodent in the world! Capybaras have slightly webbed feet, no tail, and 20 teeth. Their back legs are slightly longer than their front legs and their muzzles are blunt with eyes, nostrils, and ears on top of their head. Females are slightly heavier than males. (Wikipedia)

Theses semi-aquatic rodents live in small herds (usually between 10 & 30) throughout most of South America, and feed on aquatic plants and tree bark as well as grasses. They have an extremely efficient digestive system that sustains the animal while 75% of its diet encompasses only 3-6 species of plants.

Capybaras are also excellent swimmers and can survive completely underwater for up to five minutes. If necessary, a Capybara can sleep underwater, keeping its nose just at the waterline.
