Take a look at the hillside across the road above the Fire Station and you will see the remnants of the Arizona Sandstone Company quarry. Stone from this quarry was used to build the Los Angeles County Courthouse as well as our very own Coconino County Courthouse. If you have the chance to take a walking tour of downtown Flagstaff you will see several buildings with stone quarried from this site.

Check at the Flagstaff Visitors Center for a pamphlet by Richard and Sherry Mangum for a self guided tour or schedules for a guided tour. Marie Jackson in her book Stone Landmarks also has a geologists tour of downtown which includes geologic highlights along with samples of the stone used in buildings.

This cache is part of the Historic Route 66 Geocaching Project, a series created by the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona and designated as an official Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission.
