This is the second cache in my "Why I hate Palmerston" series. Admittedly the cache is just outside Palmerston for now but will probably be a suburb in the future.
In the early hours of the 20th October 1996, Tactical Police were sitting off a vehicle in Darwin city waiting for it's owner to return. Earlier bouncers at a nightclub identified the occupant as being the same man who produced a pistol and fired it at them a month earlier.
Police waited for the owner, Klaus Weidt, to return but did not confront him due to the large numbers of the public in the area. Following the vehicle to just outside the CBD, Police attempted a apprehension but Klaus ignored the lights and sirens thus initiating a pursuit.
The pursuit travelled from the CBD through Winellie, Berrimah and past Palmerston, eventually traveling out along Channel Island Road. The vehicle Klaus was driving was a 4 wheel drive and he headed along a dirt track past the Elizabeth River bridge.
The Tactical Police were also in a 4X4 and were able to keep up. 100 metres along this track was a bend to the right. Klaus however went straight, ploughing into the scrub for a couple of hundred metres before his vehicle became wedged on a stump. Police exited their vehicle with torches and firearms. Unfortunately Klaus (probably suffering a psychotic episode) produced a pistol (which he discharged) and a rifle. A gunfight ensued and Klaus was mortally wounded. The Police, unharmed, evacuated Klaus to an ambulance out on the main road but he was DOA when he reached the hospital.
The cache location is within 100 metres of the shooting scene in typical Top End scrub. Do this at night if you want to enhance your experience with a little spookiness.
