This cache is located in the middle of the old Freshwater, Yarmouth, Newport Railway line.
Initially constructed in 1886 – 1888, it started full passenger use in May 1889.
It was never the most successful line and operated in bankruptcy for many years.
The final axe fell, along with many other rail lines, with the last train running on 20 Sept 1953.

The western end of the line has been retained for public use as a bridleway/ cycle path. However this section has been completely taken back by agriculture and domestic use. There are proposals for the reclaiming of the route for a cycle path but they are currently a long way from fruition.
The nearby villages of Wellow, Thorley, Ningwood and Newbridge have recently escaped from the threat of a large scale wind farm that was proposed to cover much of the open farm land to the south of the area. So, for the moment, this area retains much of its “olde world” rural village charm. For the smallest cutest rental cottage we know, swing past Mrs Tiggywinkle’s (N50 41.50 W001 27.132) in Wellow just down the road, it is not much larger than two cars!
The cache is a concealed 1/4 ltr tuperware tub, located near the site of the old Ningwood station.
If you fancy a break from your travels, the New Inn in Shalfleet (N50 42.1 W001 24.893) or Horse and Groom in Ningwood (N50 42.050 W001 26.1)are both recommended. Both have good food with the second also having excellent outdoor children’s play facilities. Just head north, up to the main Newport/ Yarmouth road.
