Geocache Description:


This cache is located at the central end of the old Freshwater, Yarmouth, Newport Railway line.
Initially constructed in 1886 – 1888, it started full passenger use in May 1889.
It was never the most successful line and operated in bankruptcy for many years. Bizarrely, for much of it’s life, the line was served by it’s own Newport Station with passengers having to walk from the larger Railway Station just down the road for conections.
The final axe fell, along with many other rail lines, with the last train running on 20 Sept 1953.
Newport was still served by its remaining station, connecting Cowes, Newport and Smallbrook (Ryde) until this finally closed in 1966 thanks to the Beeching legacy.

Now completely taken over by roads and retail stores it is very hard to see any evidence of the old station or lines. A few years ago this area was cleared and a small urban park made beside the path to recognise the history of the area.

The cache is now a completely concealed 1/2 ltr pot, located near the site of the old Newport FYN Station.
