Geocache Description:

Located on open access land near Oxenholme, Cumbria, with a bit of a clamber up. Can be prickly so a glove will help. Please cover naturally when you leave.

The site is suggestive of the cleft that saw the mighty battle in Middle Earth (see Lord of the Rings), which is appropriate considering the name of the whole area! BUT after repeated attacks by MuggleUruk-Hai, Helm has made a strategic move from his original site to keep watch over his beloved Deep - until the return of the King!

There is gorse around so take care in latter stages but the route is readily accessible.

Nearby is the high point of The Helm, where you will see Castlesteads, the remains of an iron age fort (or some would say it is 5th century AD). It is well worth a walk up and imagine you are back in 600BC looking over the earth ramparts down to the marshy lowlands below, holding your new fangled iron axe, wary of a Celtic raiding party who may be after the wild beasts, or even bears, roaming the more fertile upper land.

But come back to the present and enjoy the view over nearby Natland and Oxenholme, with Kendal in the distance, and then make the choice between going north or south to find a good meal and refreshing drink.

And do enjoy following the Ring round Middle Earth on The Helm - there are many opportunities now..
