On Feb. 19, 1988 at approximately 9:26pm, American Eagle flight
3378 crashed in foggy and drizzly conditions shortly after takeoff
from RDU airport, killing all 10 passengers and both crew members
on board. It was the first fatal crash of a commercial plane at RDU
and remains the second-deadliest crash at RDU. (American Eagle
flight 3379 - an almost identical flight number! - crashed while
attempting to land - also in the dark, rain, and fog - on December
13, 1994 killing 15 and seriously injuring 5 others). For more

(The coordinates listed in the crash report don't match with the
description of the crash site, so I can't be certain of the exact
location, but it's almost certainly within a few hundred feet of
