Geocache Description:

A nice surprise behind Wattle Flat. 4wds and 2wd with good ground clearance will get very close to this one.

For a few years now I have been passing a sign pointing to a walk behind the little village of Wattle Flat. My curiosity finally got the better of me and decided to take a look. Parking at the head of the track, I ventured out with a cache in the bag just in case I happened upon a likely spot. The track soon disappeared so I wandered about the easily traversed terrain for about half an hour and I did come across a suitable site.
The area is now a reserve but once was a bustling gold field. There is still quite a bit of evidence of the activity of earlier days. Perhaps you could bring a metal detector or gold pan and have a go yourself. Some more gold may have come to the surface after all these years. You never know your luck :-)
Anyway, after placing the cache I headed back to the car by the most direct route and found that there was a very pleasant camp/picnic ground and lagoon just a few hundred meters further down the road from where I parked. If you are passing through in your camper, this would make a great overnight spot that you would probably have all to yourself.
The cache is named after (visit link) in keeping with my cache naming requirements. I thought it would have been clever to make this a multi with the first co-ordinates taking you to the abandoned church in this same village. In the end I thought I would spare you the effort of having to load additional co-ords into the gps and so I just made this one a traditional. After all, everyone did lose faith in the goldfield some time ago so the name is still appropriate.
