Geocache Description:

This cache is one in a series dedicated to amazing & unusual organisms. I am astounded by the amazing diversity of plant and animal life that exists in this world. But the real fascination lies with those organisms that are amazing, unusual and odd.

These organisms have capabilities that we do not share and can barely imagine: extraordinary navigational methods, abilities to regenerate lost limbs, live symbiotically with light-producing bacteria, reproduce asexually, survive in suspended animation, change shape and color at will and much more!

Hummingbird (Family Trochilidae)

This tiny bird is amazing in many ways! First, it is the world's smallest bird (some less than 3 inches long!). WOW! Second, the hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backward, straight up and down, sideways, and even upside down! And the strangest of all, it can fly without going anywhere (hovering). Capable of sustained hovering, these birds can maintain their position while drinking nectar or eating tiny bugs from flower blossoms.

Hummingbirds do not spend all day flying, as the energy costs of this would be prohibitive. In fact, they spend most of their lives sitting, perching and watching the world. Hummingbirds feed in many small meals, consuming up to their own body weight in nectar and insects per day. They spend an average 10%-15% of their time feeding and 75%-80% sitting, digesting and watching. Obtaining this much food requires a lot of work. (Wikipedia)
