Geocache Description:

This cache is one in a series dedicated to amazing & unusual organisms. I am astounded by the amazing diversity of plant and animal life that exists in this world. But the real fascination lies with those organisms that are amazing, unusual and odd.

These organisms have capabilities that we do not share and can barely imagine: extraordinary navigational methods, abilities to regenerate lost limbs, live symbiotically with light-producing bacteria, reproduce asexually, survive in suspended animation, change shape and color at will and much more!

Amoeba (Amoeba proteus)

One of the most mysterious microscopic life forms is the amoeba! This protozoan resembles a blob of jelly-like substance. The amazing thing about amoebae is the fact that they often have no definite shape since they are always oozing in one direction or another. Therefore, they have the ability to change their shape at any time using locomotor organelles called pseudopodia. (Weird & Wonderful Life, by Michael Marten, John May, and Rosemary Taylor).

The amoeba is a unicellular organism. They have a single cell that appears to be not much more than cytoplasm held together by a flexible cell wall. Floating in this cytoplasm, all kinds of cell bodies can be found. The most obvious is the nucleus. Some species have only one nucleus, others may have hundreds of nuclei. Amoeba are found in decaying vegetation, in fresh and saltwater, wet soil, and animals.

Look under the microscope!
