On the mountains above Risan and quite close to the Risan to Zablak highway, currently being constructed, is where your search begins. The start of the hike is where Montenegro's famous transversal hiking route crosses the old road above Gornji Ledenice. Park your car at N42 32.924 E018 42.691 and follow the route waymarked with red and white indicators. To find the cache, your route will take you upwards near a pair of Austro-Hungarian fortresses, known as "Ober" and "Under". These were built during the latter part of the 19C just after the second uprising of Krivošije, to safeguard the Austro-Hungarian empire's military harbour of Boka Kotorska, the most important war harbour of the day, from incursions by the then neighbouring Montenegrins. Now, the forts are in a poor state of repair, but the remains indicate the furious building activity at the time by military architects and master stonemasons. It might be good to combine this venture with its partner cache "FORTRESS - OBER". If you discover the date when these were built, don't reveal your secret - just tell "The Montenegro Geocachers" Please support "CACHE IN - TRASH OUT" to make Montenegro a clean environment http://www.geocaching.com/cito/
If you want to learn more about these fortresses, check out "The Austro-Hungarian Fortresses of Montenegro - A Hikers Guide" This is available from Amazon Books, "So Bookstore" in Herceg Novi or the "Forza Souvenir Shop" by the main gate in Kotor.
If you already have a copy, please post a photo holding it near the fortress!
