Pynchester Moat is one of the few medieval moat sites of its type in Greater London. There are no visible remains of the manor house which it used to surround.
The moat's main purpose was probably to act as a symbol of status. However it would also have provided a convenient private water supply and a source of fish on Fridays and fastdays, a quick means of dousing fires, a sewage outlet and an extensive barrier between the house hold and the workings of the farm.
