Discovering this cache will take you on a walk/bike/roller blade of
nearly 2 miles along the Traverse City waterfront. From its
inception until the construction of the Parkway in the 1950’s, the
city’s bay front was an industrial area of sawmills, factories and
railroad tracks interrupted by three small beach parks. The four
cherry canneries each dumped their waste water containing stems,
leaves, pulp, and pits into the bay or the river which carried them
into the bay. When there was a wind from the north, the waves
brought this material, as well as decayed sawdust stirred up by the
waves, onshore so that for swimmers the first 10 - 15 yards out
from the beach was a thick organic soup. Traverse City kids learned
the breast stroke at a young age. Finding the answers to the
questions will give you a taste of that and other tales of Traverse
City history. Obviously, the cache is not at the above coordinates.
