This quick cache is not far from a house that has a memorial on the front lawn to the first Smith's that lived in Utopia..Do stop to read the stone and learn some history. See reference point coordinates. The following information is encraved on the stone. Eugene Smith was born 1803 at Crionagh Lake County Cavan Ulster Ireland. A graduate apothecary at University College Dublin 1826. He emigrated to Upper Canada in 1828 and served in the military at Fort York during the Rebellion of 1837. He married Sarah Free of Collingwood (1838) and after her death married Bridget Keating of Rose Mount (1853). Each family had 6 children. Eugene built a hostelry (Inn) in 1852 on this site which served as an important stopover for the railway workers during the construction of the North Western Railway. He named the community Utopia after Sir Thomas More's 1516 book "Utopia". Eugene Smith known as "The Old Oak Tree" died in 1908 as the county's oldest citizen.
