The Nene
Way Series
started by Cassie's
Crusaders
The Nene Way footpath starts at
Badby on the western borders of Northamptonshire. It meanders along
the river and takes you through small villages and towns following
the Nene Valley for 110 miles. It passes through Northamptonshire,
Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire before joining The Wash near Sutton
Bridge. The route was opened with the support of the Countryside
Commission in the late 1980's. |

Yarwell is a small village near the River Nene. It has a Water
Mill, a Church and a public house.
The 13th Century Church of St Magdalene originally had north and
south aisles which were removed in the late 18th Century after they
became unsafe. It also houses the tomb of Humphrey Bellamy who, as
a child, was looked after by the villagers when he was found, ill
and destitute, while walking to London to find his uncle, a rich
merchant. He became prosperous but never forgot the villagers
kindness and after his death he was returned to be buried at
Yarwell and a charity in his name was created to help the poor of
the village. It’s thought that the tale of Dick Wittington was
based on his life.
Yarwell Water Mill is now the site of
Yarwell
Mill Camping and Caravan Park
The Angel Inn, the village pub on Main Street, is open 12:00-15:00
and 19:00-23:00 Tuesday to Sunday and closed all day Monday.
From Nassington The Nene Way brings you through Yarwell Mill,
across fields and into Yarwell on Mill Road. At the corner of Mill
Road and Main Street you walk up a path between houses to open
fields. Once through the 2nd Kissing gate from Yarwell you have a
choice of walks giving short diversions from the Nene Way.
The Nene Way used to follows the edge of the field round to the
left, but now follows the ‘Simsey Island Walk’ shown on the
signpost.
The Lock walk will take you round a bit more of the river and back
to the Nene Way at the Lock.
An extra diversion of about ½ a mile takes you over the lock and
Wansford Weir to walk round Simsey Island.
Parking is easiest along Main Street, but please don’t cause an
obstruction or block access.
The cache is a 1L Lock&lock type box, with log book and the
usual swaps etc. Please retrieve and replace it carefully to keep
it well hidden.
Total walking distances -
from Yarwell to the cache and back is just over ½ mile.
or about 1¼ mile taking the longer circuit, plus an extra ½ mile if
you walk round the island.
Yarwell to Wansford via the Nene Way is just under 1 mile
or is about 1¼ mile via the lock, plus an extra ½ mile if you walk
round the island.
We would like this series to spread further along the Nene
Way in both directions. Please contact us through our profile if
you would like to add to this series and we will send details of
the code for the cache page.
