The cache is a lock'n'lock container located near the top of a
popular descent trail for rock climbers who have finished scaling
the Near Trapps cliff and need to go back down to the base of the
cliff.
This trail involves rock scrambling and can be slippery
especially with fallen leaves. But note - it is on an established
(but unmarked) trail - no climbing is necessary.
If you'll be less than 30 minutes, you can park in the scenic
overlook on Rt. 44/55 and walk uphill a short distance to the
trailhead. Otherwise, you should park in the West Trapps Parking
Lot off of Rt 44/55 after the Trapps Bridge overpass going
westbound. An easy trail takes you from the end of the parking lot
over the Trapps Bridge to cross the highway. You'll have to walk
back down Rt. 44/55 to find the trail head for the climber's trail
under the Near Trapps cliff. From that trail, you'll have to find
the climber's descent trail on your right. It starts going back the
other way, almost parallel to the cliff, then upwards to the top.
Because you're next to a cliff, you may experience signal
bounce.
On busy weekends, especially in the autumn, finding parking can
be difficult. Best bet is to arrive before 9am or late in the
afternoon.
The Mohonk Preserve is a private land conservation organization
established to protect the Shawangunk Ridge, it is not public land
funded by the government. There is a day use fee to use the
preserve which funds its maintenance and programs. For the current
day pass fees, check the Mohonk Preserve website. Note
that dogs must be leashed at all times.
