
Jesse "Pop" Haines was born July 22, 1893, in Clayton, Ohio. He played high school baseball in Phillipsburg and entered into the major leagues on July 20, 1918 with the Cincinnati Reds. Two years later he played for the St. Louis Cardinals and remained there for the next 18 years.
Haines had a blazing fastball and acquired a knuckleball that extended his career. The 1927 season was Haines's finest, as he rolled up 24 victories and led the NL with six shutouts and 25 complete games. He followed with a 20-8 season in 1928, as the Cardinals won their second pennant. He pitched for three more pennant-winners: 1930, 1931, and 1934. In World Series play he was 3-1, with a 1.67 ERA. In 1970 the Veterans Committee named him to the Hall of Fame. He died on August 5, 1978 and is buried in Bethel Cemetery in Phillipsburg.
Although Jesse Haines never played at Clayton's Hardscrabble park, it is very appropriate for his cache to reside here.
