Geocache Description:

Located in Battle Row Campground along the original Parkway Right of Way. Park in the Campground during season, April to November, (check in at office) or on side streets in winter.

The Long Island Motor Parkway has been described as the first "high-speed, limited access, reinforced-concrete, landscaped parkway". It was the brainchild of William "Willie" K. Vanderbilt Jr. and was built in several stages, eventually running from 195th Street in Queens to Lake Ronkonkoma, a distance of 48 miles. The first section of 9 miles opened on October 10, 1908, running from Merrick Avenue to Round Swamp Road. The Vanderbilt Cup Race was run on October 24 of that year over a 28 mile course, including these 9 miles.

From "Deadman's Curve" (GCR73E) the Parkway ran through the north end of what is now known as Bethpage State Park, roughly following the present day access road to the parking lot, coming out near Jo Ann Drive, and then crossing Round Swamp Road on a bridge near present day Vanderbilt Lane and Motor Lane. The Bethpage Toll Lodge was on Toll Place. It heads into Suffolk along the southern border of Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

The Parkway was successful until 1930, when the effects of the Great Depression and the opening of the (free) Northern State Parkway led to a steady decline in revenues. The last tolls were collected on Easter Sunday, April 17 1938. The Right of Way was turned over to the the counties of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk in lieu of back taxes. All entrances were blocked off starting April 22. The "Final Report of Toll Lodge Receipts" is dated April 19, 1938, 70 years to the day before this cache was placed. The wall you see was built across the Parkway to stop people from using it.

Battle Row was named for the brick yard workers who lived there and "battled" on pay day after some drinking.

Cache is a small Lock 'N Lock originally containing 2 Hot Wheels cars donated by Andrew. Pin for the FTF.
