Welcome to the Nottawasaga River.
Although the terrain to this cache is generally easy going, there are times throughout the year, such as the early spring run, when the water levels are high and the water runs quickly. In certain areas the banks are steep and footing may be tricky.
Please be mindful of any children in your keep and monitor them accordingly.
This area is frequently visted by people fishing and those just wanting to view a beautiful area.
What is also unique about this area is the fact that two sawmills were originally located near this cache on the Nottawasaga river.
To the North, Alex Arnnold built a steam powered sawmill in the 1860's which he operated for several years.
To the South, George Flecher built a water powered sawmill in the 1870's.
George Kearing became its owner in 1887 and sold it to William Hatton in 1903.
About 1905 a large concrete dam was built. William Hatton and later sons, Jack and Wilfrid operated the mill until it closed in the mid-thirties. During the peak period twelve men were employed.
In the day, the area was known as "The Fisher" for in the spring just below the dam thousands of fish were caught.
A plaque has been erected by the Essa Historical Society with the assistance of the Township of Essa and the Ministry of Culture and Communications to serve as a reminder that "Two Pioneer Saw Mills" were erected near by.
