Located near what was once an abandon and unmarked cemetary for the original Mission Creek Village.
"In 1894, when the Hinckley Fire completely destroyed Mission Creek Village, it was a town of 73 residents, mostly Swedish immigrants. It bosted the sawmill, a hotel, general store, blacksmith shop, 26 homes, and a public school. Everything but one house was destroyed. The people saved themselves by lying in a potato patch as the fire raged around them."
from "Pine County...and its memories" p 59 by Jim Cordes
There is now a single stone monument commemorating 15 pioneers buried nearby from the old Mission Creek Village. The wooden grave markers and all grave records were also destroyed in that fire.
The County Highway going close by this site was actually diverted around the graves, largely due to the efforts of a local resident woman who remembered them being there and fought to protect them.
For many years, the graves were left unmarked; except for an old wooden cross someone put together with boards and nailed to a nearby tree. This stone monument was only recently erected. You can still see depressions in the ground locating some of the graves. The cache site is near by, but a respectful distance from the graves. Pay your respects then start looking. Good Luck!
Large pill container wrapped in dark colored duct tape.
Log book, pencil and a few small things.
Be careful parking and leaving as there can be a lot of traffic on this highway, and you will be just over the crest of the hill. There is a small parallel parking area on the East side of the highway, and a good place to turn around immediately North and a very short ways south of this location. Stay on the East side of the Highway. Nothing on the West side but private posted land.
04-04-09 stopped by to check these coordinates.
Ran several hundred averaged readings with 2 GPSr units and came up with:
Garmin Etrex Vista HCX = .251 & .202
Garmin Astro 220 = .253 & .197
Accuracy was 10 to 12 ft.
Another cacher stopped by and his showed:
Garmin Legend = .252 & .199
All units were within 2 ft of each other. Mine had fresh batteries, WAAS enabled.
