Ghost Road Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Eclectic Penguin: It looks like about 100 metres of public highway has been "clawed back" by placing the gate where it now stands, based on the current 1:50K Ordnance Survey map. You now can't get anywhere near the cache location without jumping a fence with CCTV warnings.

My guess this is done to prevent fly tipping as this was really bad down this road and only the local land owner and Welsh Water really needed access.

I've been unable to retrieve the container because do do so would mean unauthorised trespass.

Geocache Description:

A nice easy roadside cache. The road actually ends at the cache location - but it didn't used to hence the cache name.

The cache is placed in what should be an easy to find position within a few metres of the end of a road. There is nearby parking in the turning space provided.

Pre-open cast map highlighting the lost roads. The road leading north east from Saron was replaced by another that runs in parallel, the others were not replaced. Other roads on this map have been replaced as public footpaths.

The location is at the edge of what until only a few years ago was an open cast mine. When a mine takes over an area like this many guarantees have to be made to the locals - mainly that the original field boundaries are restored and all rights of ways maintained.

This road appears to have been an exception - its original course can be clearly be seen continuing on down towards Saron - but no road.

Having spoken to locals who lives in Saron it seems that this is still under contention as the coal company had promised to return all rights of way to use after mining completed but it seems they found a loophole when it came to roads and decided to sell the original road's course to the local farmer.

It has lead to other peculiarities - several of the rights of ways that were restored can be seen on OS maps leading to dead ends where they met this road.

Please re-hide the cache well when you've finished as this location has the potential to be very exposed if not hidden correctly.
