Geocache Description:

1.15 mile walk through traditional Galloway oak forest on outskirts of Newton Stewart

Knockman wood is just over a mile outside the Galloway market town of Newton Stewart.It is one of the last areas of traditional oak forest and over the next few years, the remaining conifers will be removed and replanted with traditional deciduous trees. The walk has fantastic views back to Newton Stewart and to our local mountain, Cairnsmore. A great place to see roe and fallow deer.
To reach the start of the walk , follow the signs to "RSPB Wood of Cree" from the centre of Newton Stewart. The sign is found by crossing over the main road bridge in the centre of town , and the sign is 100m on the left after crossing the bridge. Go past Monigaff church and the car park is 1.2 miles from the town centre. You can either drive /cycle or walk out to the car park. There is a brown sign "Kockman Wood" on the right . Open the gate (and close afterwards!) and the car park is 300m further on. (co-ordinates N54 58.568 W 004 29.575). The cache is 1.15 mile from the car park . Initially follow the left hand forest road. After 0.5 mile (just after the dry stone wall) a newly gravelled path takes you in the right direction - it's marked with green and red post.
Walk past the old chambered cairn on your left to the cache. Once found, either retrace your steps or follow the path eventually back to the car park - another couple of miles.
