A straightforward micro with the potential for spectacular sunsets, stormy seas and good views. Stealth Required.
At the south end of Prestwick's main beach, two Salt Pan Houses which were used for extracting salt from seawater still stand. They date back to 1760.
The salters lived on the first floor and the vaults on the ground floor (now used as storage by St Nicholas Golf Club) housed the salt pans.
Today the area surrounding the Salt Pan Houses forms part of St Nicholas Golf Course. The cache site is situated outwith the perimeter of the course just off the esplanade.
The elevated tee-box at the junction of Maryborough Road and Douglas Avenue, South East of the cache site forms part of the 16th hole which is named 'Tom Morris' after Old Tom Morris who was tempted to come to Prestwick from St Andrews to lay out a course for the nearby Prestwick Golf Club. This he did, and the first Open Championship was held over its original 12 holes in October 1860.
The elevated position of the 16th tee is the site of many a photogtraph and painting incorporating the Salt Pan Houses, Golf Course and Sunset. Check any local art gallery for confirmation!!
Do not walk along the esplanade if high tides meet strong winds. You WILL get a saltwater bath!!
Take a seat and admire the ever changing view. Stealth is required as muggles abound.
