Geocache Description:

Welcome to the world of Forensic Science. Today you will learn about tool marks analysis and its place in crime scene investigation.

A tool mark is any impression, indentations, abrasion, or cut created by a tool coming into contact with another object. Examination of impressions may reveal the shape and size of the tool. For example, a crowbar used for burglary will leave different marks than a round saw used for bone cutting. Although tool marks are rarely individualizing, in certain cases the combination of many characteristics may be enough to discern the exact source of the impression.

If the object containing the tool marks can not be removed from the scene to be analyzed in the lab, the marks are collected by casting with liquid silicone. The impression or the cast are then compared with the known under a comparison microscope where two images appear side by side.
