Geocache Description:

*Not at posted coordinates*
Mystery cache located in the "No Charge" area of the park. If you wish to visit the Fort itself, there is a cover charge. **Note** Cache is availble year round but the Fort Museum is not. Placed with permission of the Fort's Director.

In the summer of 1852, Adiline Fields accompanied her husband, Lt. Charles Fields, from Kentucky to his new post along the Des Moines river to what is now known as the city of Fort Dodge. Adiline was a simple woman who loved her husband dearly and always anticipated his return to the fort when he finished his military duties. During the Spring of 1853, her husband and five men never returned from a patrol of the countryside. A search party found no trace of the men or their horses. Townspeople speculated that her husband and his men left to seek their fortune in the California gold rush. Others felt the natives sought their revenge on the patrol.
Adiline always held vigilant that her husband would return but he never did. It is said that her heart turned black and withered when her husband was never found. She died two years later. It is beleived that she still roams the Fort waiting for his return.
