Geocache Description:

death

Come stroll if you dare to one of the oldest cemeteries in the San Gabriel Valley.

This old cemetery sits atop San Felipe Hill, in Glendora. Early Spaniards used the hill as a landmark. Henry Dalton was granted this land (and surrounding property) until about 1800 when the federal government declared it public land, open for homesteading. A pioneer, JC Preston filed a homestead on the land that surrounds the cemetery. In 1866 it became apparent to Preston that the land was being used for burials of local Pioneers. Preston then gave the land back to the people in the form of a “trust”, so the people of the San Gabriel Valley could bury their dead.

There are no official records of when the first burial occurred. The actual count of those resting here is cloudy at best. The Los Angeles Times reported on March 14, 1991 that city records show the cemetery might actually sit on an Indian burial ground. Civil war vets, as well as the sister of Wyatt Earp rest here. One of the haunts, James Hodges, doesn't even have a grave, as his ashes were scattered in the cemetery in 1937.

The dead have had a rough slumber. In the 1950’s citrus trees were planted in the area. The irrigation system eroded land and undermined the graves. Some graves have been completely covered by mud. The spirits might not take kindly to the presence of mortals, as the cemetery has been vandalized in the past. Headstones have been knocked over and skulls have been stolen (according to the Glendora Signal in 1990). Nowadays the only evidence of vandals are broken headstones.

Only the absolute brave will attempt this at night as apparitions play in the cool breeze.

This one might be difficult to get to. DO NOT ENTER FROM THE RESIDENTIAL STREET TO THE EAST . In this residential area there is a sign on the little road that says NO TRESPASSING. The road runs behind a house and they have one mean Rottweiler. There are motion lights also. Again, DO NOT disturb the neighborhood by entering from the residential neighborhood. They WILL call the police. For this cache you must figure out a way to get to the cemetery from the north, west or south.

Once you get to this clandestine cemetery stand in front of the old iron gates. If you are brave enough to venture out at night, don’t be surprised if the guests make their presence known by an uninviting cold-dead air that surrounds this land. Nightly howls from coyotes off in the distance are not uncommon. Look to the right of the massive gate and you can easily walk in. There is no need to jump fences. Once you are inside, you are one with many guests. Walk on uneven ground through crumbling headstones, unmarked graves, but be respectful.

The spirits have a sense of humor and will change and play with GPS coordinates, so the coordinates given will only get you to the cemetery itself. Once inside you must walk with the dead. To nab this cache you must not disturb The Duke, as he can be a cranky when awaken from his slumber.

Heed this fair warning. The haunts will only accept worthy offerings. You must trade even or trade up.

The haunts approved of unclejon91 and not tom's gusto for being the first one to find. Who is daring for the night time first to find? Send me a night time pic to get credit for first to find at night... Curious to see how the picture comes out.
