This is a circular route, the walk is approx 10 Kms long the highest point is about 360m - unless you take the shortcut. A normal time to easy walk the route is under 3 hours, which includes breaks. There are no real climbs as the inclines are gentle. The puzzle is easy - it just depends on the way that you look at it! Even if you dont crack the puzzle the directions will bring you back to the starting point.
Surprisingly this is the second walk in the series, and it is not as long or as hard as 'A Pentland Walk'. The route goes thru moorland, hillside, woods and farmland areas. The starting point for this walk is outside Currie, at the top of the Kirkgate. Limited roadside parking is available on Harlaw Road. The co-ordinates above is for the parking area.
This walk will take you passed other caches, (8 known at this time, Dec2012), but to find them all will add time to this route. In my view, summer walking boots are still advisable even if most of the route is hardcore. Remember to take a change of shoes for the journey back in the car and some plastic bags for the walking boots
.
Start up the farm track, called Ranges Road, heading South towards the Pentland Hills. The start of the walk is marked by the Ranges Road mini cache series of 3 caches. (
Cache GC1ZPED is near the walk start).
On an old map I had it said that there was an outdoor curling site on the right in the woods. The OS map shows a rectangular pond at N55 52.673 W003 18.201. If you do some Internet research you will find that Currie played its part in creating and shaping the modern curling game.
(
Cache GC1YQYZ is in the woods on the left).
After about 20 mins walking the trees on the left stop and a farm gate opens up to the moorland. (
Cache GC1Y91E is nearby.
Out on the moorland, follow the path up to the gate and signpost, (PB).

Follow the signpost to Glencorse. The path slowly rises to the saddle at Maiden’s Cleugh. Just after the rise you will come across a wall, (PC),and I normally take a short rest here and enjoy the views. (
Cache GC1BKMJ is close.)

Looking SE you will see Glencourse Reservoir and the Moorfoot hills beyond (see photo) - looking back is Mid Lothian. As a guide time taken to reach this point approx 45 mins.
Your choice:
A) If you want to be energetic you can go up left and over Harbour hill. Harbour Hill provides some nice views of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. (
Cache GC1CJ9Y is nearby). At the other side of Harbour hill make you way up the slight rise to the path X roads, (PE). This last stretch can be muddy. At the path X roads turn left.
B) If you want to take the easier but longer route. Continue down the path towards Glencorse. On the left you will see the ruins of Kirkton cottage. ( Just after the last tree on the left! ) Now contour left, round the hill (there is a faint path, which can be muddy in patches) and into Phantoms’s Cleugh, (PD). Join the path and head up NNW The path continues up to a path X roads, (PE).

It shows the path up Phantoms’s Cleugh, and the X paths, with Bonally Reservoir and Edinburgh in the background
Continue on the path, and head up to the tree line. Walk NNE beside the wall towards the gate (PF) and turn left. You have now entered Bonaly Country Park. This area was designated a Country Park in 1984 and is owned by the City of Edinburgh Council. It is 290 ha, excluding reservoirs in size. Bonaly Reservoir is on the left. Follow this wide track. Shortly views of Edinburgh will open out.
Waypoint 1: Is just off the track, (PG), and it should be a simple find
, it’s a painted half paver. The numbers on the paver represents both the AB & CD cords of where the cache is hidden.
N55 53.2AB W003 18.CD3 (Note AB does NOT equal CD)
Leave the paver with the words ‘Cache Info’ facing upwards. If you cannot work out the cache co-ordinates the route will take you back to your starting point.
With the co-ordinates now recorded continue down the track. The track follows the Dean Burn, which is on your right.
At the tree line go thru the gate, (PH), and turn left, and follow the signpost ‘To Torduff Reservoir’ There are signs for 'The Torduff Water Walk' a blue arrow with a white tap, follow these thru the wood. The path takes you along the edge of the trees. A gate is at the farthest west point, (PI).
Thru the gate and down the path to the single track tarmac road. Torduff Reservoir is on the right. Now follow the sign to East Kinleith, left up the road, (PJ), and up a steep climb at the back of Cubbiedean reservoir.
Clubbiedean Reservoir was constructed in 1849 to help supply Edinburgh's growing demand for water, and it and Torduff reservoir are owned by Scottish Water. Walk the length of Cubbiedean (
Cache GCGX6C is nearby).
INFO : Also nearby is Clubbiedean Hillfort and is one of a number of important archaeological sites in the Pentland Hills Regional Park and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
(
Cache GC1F2B5 is nearby but slightly off route)
The tarmac road becomes a farmers track, and leads to Middle Kinleith, (PK). Turn left here, back onto a tarmac road.
Poets Glen is on the right (
Cache GC11CHE is about 300m off route down the glen).
You should now select your GPS to find the cache location. If for some reason you where unable to solve the co-ords then select the Parking co-ordinates on your GPS – to return to your starting point - its just up the road from where you are now on.
I hope you enjoyed the walk thru the different areas on Edinburghs boundry. You can walk this route in the other direction, but I always think it is harder.
Finally, it would be interesting to know in the log, the time taken, and how many other caches did you visit on the route.
Updated Oct 2009, to include Ranges Road caches. Updated bookmark for 'A Second Pentland Walk'.
Update Dec 2012, sadly the demise of 2 caches 'Phantoms Cleugh' & 'Poker Chips Red'. Their reference has been removed from the text.
