The cache is situated in Philips Park, Prestwich, not far from
the multi-sited sculpture ‘Our seats are almost
touching’
The Irwell Valley Sculpture Trail
The Irwell Sculpture Trail was developed along a 30-mile route
through the Irwell Valley formerly known as the Irwell Valley Way.
Following the River from its source on the South Pennine Moors to
where it becomes the Manchester Ship Canal at Salford Quays, the
first sculpture was installed in 1987. Thanks to an Arts Lottery
award in 1996, the project grew, and 30 sculptures were eventually
installed along the route. Unfortunately, some of these have been
destroyed by vandals: one, notably, even before its official
opening. This series of caches has been based on the remaining
sculptures, and has been numbered following the Irwell upstream
from Salford Quays.
The Sculpture - Our Seats Are Almost Touching
Site: Philips Park, Prestwich
Sculptor: Paul Bradley
Installed: 2000
Material: Concrete composite
Size: Length varies between 0.6m and 3m
Description: The bench has been produced in a dark grey concrete
composite with a smooth, flame finish. The full bench forms a
circle but has been split into eight segments of lengths varying
from 60 cm to 300 cm and placed as both single and group seating
around the grounds near Philips Park Hall. Each segment enhances a
vista or provides a tranquil place for contemplation. Sadly, at
least one of the bench segments in the main group has been knocked
over.
The cache
Unlike most of the other caches in this series, this cache has had
to be placed out of sight of the sculpture, owing to the proximity
of other caches in the area. For those who are interested in
viewing the sculpture, I have added a number of waypoints that lead
you to all the pieces of the sculpture that I could find. The cache
can be reached from the small walled garden that contains three of
the sculpture pieces. I will only accept a find if you sign the
log, so please come armed with a pen or pencil to sign it.
