What are you doing about being green?
There is talk everywhere about going green. Every magazine you pick up has an article about "green" something. The book stores have their own section of green books. You hear about large companies "going green." People are going green with buildings. We are being bombarded with material on being green. I am not a green geek or guru on this subject. But I admit to caching the eco-bug somewhat and have started making simple changes in the way I live that can lessen my impact on the Earth. These are some simple steps for “going green.” 1. Say no to plastic AND paper bags. Use sturdy canvas or other washable bags. 2. Buy local foods. The average food at the grocery store has traveled 1200 miles. 3. Save water by turning it off while brushing teeth and shaving or shorten the time of your showers. 4. Recycle. To get a curbside container call 880-6054. For information on recycling go to: www.swdahsv.org 5. When a light bulb burns out, replace with an energy efficient bulb. 6. Don't pour hazardous chemicals down the drain. 7. Buy organic foods. Also buy foods in bulk to save on packaging. 8. Plant a tree. 9. Stop using chlorine bleach. Use hydrogen peroxide based mixes instead. 10.Check the air pressure of your tires. Saves gasoline. 11. Minimize driving: carpool or ride a bike once a week. 12. Run errands clockwise. Saves gas while waiting to make left-hand turns. 13.Wash your clothes in cold water. 14.Seal and weather-strip your home. 15.Run dishwasher only when full. 16.Turn off/unplug your computer, TV, DVD player etc when not in use. 17.Compost food scraps. 18.Adjust your thermostat by 2º up in the summer and 2º down in the winter. 19.Eat at home one more meal a week. 20. Eat more veggies. Some of these things are easy changes and some require a bit more planning. As geocachers, we enjoy the Earth and should consider our impact on it. Logging requirement: 1. Please tell in your log one or more things that you already do to be ecofriendly. 2. Please tell in your log one or more things that you plan to start inorder to be ecofriendly. Logs will be deleted that don't meet the requirements.
