The Gantz Park cache has been placed in Gantz Park on a bridge over
Gantz Run for the purpose of welcoming cachers to this historic
municipal park. Aside from the cache, the gems of this park are the
Gardens at Gantz Farm and the Arboretum.
Welcome to Gantz Park
The Gantz farmhouse is one of two sites in Grove
City listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Adam and
Catherine (Penick) Gantz, both born in and married in Washington
County, PA, came west to Ohio and built the house in 1832 as part
of a 200-acre farm, which is now one of Grove City’s oldest
buildings. The land upon which the house, garden, and barn sit was
originally part of Grove City founding father and revolutionary war
veteran Colonel Washington’s post-war land grant and the land of
Gantz Farm was purchased from him by Adam's parents Andrew and
Margret Gantz in 1817 for $5 an acre. Adam, Catherine, and their
eight sons and six daughters lived in the farmhouse until 1973 when
the house and farm were donated to the city to be used as a
municipal park.
Gantz Farm House
The Gantz family lineage can be traced back
through Washington County, Pennsylvania to Germany, where the
family name was originally Goose, which was later Americanized to
Gantz. Today the Gantz farmhouse and property is home to The
Gardens at Gantz Farm, 10 unique herb gardens that include the
gardens of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow as well as other special
garden interest points feature culinary plants, herbal, oils used
as fragrance, medicinal chemicals, pigments used to color natural
fibers, knot garden, taxonomic groups and a cutting garden.
The Gardens
The Gardens draw an estimated 10,000 visitors
each year. The entire eastern side of the park, where the cache is
located, has been designated as the Gantz Park Arboretum.
Cache Site
This is yet another of my Grove City park
caches. For this cache, park in the Gantz Farm parking lot at 2255
Home Road (near the barn), walk east over one bridge, and follow
the paved path to the cache site. (A car could get slightly closer
on Home Road, but there is no convenient cache and dash pull-off.)
The cache has been placed where it should remain dry year-round and
there is no need to go below the bridge or into the creek. Distance
from car to cache is about 0.1 mile. The container itself is a
1x3x4" clear plastic lock box with a green Geocache label and is
held in place magnetically.
After retrieving the cache, please take a few moments to walk on
the brick sidewalk through the historic herb garden located next to
the parking lot and immediately behind the farmhouse, especially in
the spring and summertime. There is also a nice fenced in
playground and shaded pavilion with picnic tables nearby. Due to
the (seasonal) gardens, playground, and paved walkways, this cache
is ideal for children. Adult supervision, however, will be
necessary for cache retrieval and
replacement.
Pictures taken of the gardens (!),
farmhouse, barn, playground, pavilion, and gazebo (!) at various
times and seasons throughout the year are highly encouraged for
uploading to the website gallery!
