This is the site of the old Beacon Mill, moved here by railroad, brick by brick in 1925 and remained in operation until 2002. In Sept. of 2003 the plant suffered a major fire that would become one of the largest fires in NC history. Over 1,000,000 square feet, 14 acres of building burnt to the ground including the 5 story original building. There were 367 firefighters, 24 fire engines and 7 ladder trucks battling the blaze which lasted 3 days. The placement of this cache is within feet of the original beacon fire department building, you can still see the base of the walls nearby. For historical reasons the Beacon employee WWII memorial was placed in the front yard of the present fire station.
