Geocache Description:

Take an easy walk along the Prescott Heritage River Trail to find this micro. Park near the marina, at N44 42.645 W75 30.678, and follow the paved route for a roundtrip of one kilometre along the beautiful St. Lawrence River. After you have found the cache, sit for a while to enjoy the atmosphere, and, of course, the view.

Prescott Heritage River Trail, part of Fort Wellington National Historic Site of Canada, offers a unique glimpse into the community’s past. Loyalist founder, Major Edward Jessup, first settled this point of land in 1784. In the War of 1812, local militia built a gun battery nearby to protect the town from attack. From here British troops launched their successful attack across the St. Lawrence River against Ogdensburg, New York, in February 1813. During the railway boom of the 1850’s, the Prescott and Bytown Railway Company reshaped the landscape, building trestles and tracks to their new depot. Later the Canadian Pacific Railway set up shop on the waterfront adding more tracks, a roundhouse, sheds and ferry dock. By the 1970’s, the railway operation was in decline and the track, buildings and dock were removed. Parks Canada purchased the property in 1982 and is revitalizing this open public space for future generations to enjoy.
