Translated - German Settlers Remembered. .A nice easy little cache to remember the contribution of the early German Settlers.
When the French ship the Comte de Paris landed the first settlers at Akaroa on 17th August 1840, there were also a number of German Settlers on board. To date their contribution to the heritage and early development of this area has largely been ignored.
Surnames of these colonists include -Breitmeyer, -Gurtner, -Hahn, -Hettich -Walter, -Woll and Waeckerle.
Breitmeyers still own land in little river, and Takamatua is still known to locals as German Bay.
Buried here are George and Elizabeth Breitmeyer, who are the great-grandparents of a fellow committee member of the Comte de Paris Descendants Group Inc. see www.comte-de-paris-descendants.org.nz
Please take time to consider the great courage it took to carve a living from the land and acknowledge the honoured place these settlers deserve in New Zealands History.
**The Church is still in use, so please time your visit carefully **
The cache is a small square Camo-Painted plastic box.
When placed it contained.
