In 1993 with little advance notice, credit-card company MBNA Corp.
1st arrived on the Midcoast scene when it dropped thousands of jobs
into the one-stoplight city of Camden pouring millions of dollars
into local schools and nonprofits -- all because, according to
local legend, a friendly resident lent money to the man who one day
would be MBNA's chief executive when his car broke down.
3 years later in 1996 MBNA arrived in Belfast. ''It's the
biggest thing to happen to Belfast since the poultry industry in
the 1950's by far.'' said Jay Davis, deputy editor of the weekly
Maine Times, who at the time was co-writing a town history.
Almost overnight, as MBNA's workforce exploded, Belfast was
transformed. The city, once home to chicken factories that poured
grease and guts into the Passagassawakeag River, began to teem with
executives in business suits, talking on cellphones and riding
around in black SUVs. (Quote taken from a Boston.com business
article)
When MBNA came to the midcoast area the impact was huge. There
was great concern about the future of our small coastal town and
its residents after word that MBNA was leaving. Fortunately another
bank took over and decided to keep the call center here in Maine
and as a result only a small percentage of folks experienced a
career change due to the downsizing.
You can read more about the company by visiting MBNA's Wikipedia
page
As this was a major event in this area I decided to create a
theme cache that reminds us of the impact of financial institutions
everywhere.
The only requirement for TRADING is that you must swap something
related to the financial industry. Trades do not require a company
logo but should represent something used in or by the banking
industry.
Examples: a calculator, A motivational book or CD, a Neck Tie, an
abacus would be cool And as you know....
Money of all kinds is fun
Basically anything having something to do with the financial world
works as a trade in this themed cache.
Anyone can sign the logbook as a find but you should stick with
the theme to trade out. Travelbugs and other trackables are always
welcome to visit.
Enjoy and Good Luck
P.S. if you want to make it a good hike, after locating this
cache you can walk much further to find LITTLE RIVER CACHE GC12DXN
at the other end. (It drops you out at the waterfall on Rt 1 by
Little River Baptist Church)
***This cache in no way is intended to endorse any specific
company, it was designed as an homage to the now extinct credit
card company MBNA which merged with another bank in 2006.***
